Wisdom teeth are your third set of molars and the last permanent teeth to erupt in the mouth. For most adults, wisdom teeth come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Some patients experience no complications when their wisdom teeth come in, but many others develop impacted wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth can become impacted when the mouth is too crowded to allow the teeth erupt or another tooth is in the wisdom tooth’s path. This can cause pain, infections in the gums, and damage the surrounding teeth and jawbones.

If you need a tooth extraction, call Oak Park Dental Associates. Our team will perform an examination and take X-rays to determine the condition of your tooth and risks of damage or infection to the surrounding tissues. Before your extraction, we will numb the tooth using a local anesthetic and administer sedation as necessary to make your experience as comfortable as possible. Dr. Lim and our team will then remove the tooth and pack the area with gauze. We may close the area with a stitch as necessary.
Following your procedure, Dr. Lim will have you bite down on a piece of sterile gauze to stop the bleeding until a blood clot can form. Pain and swelling are normal and should pass in two to three days. Dr. Lim may prescribe antibiotics and pain relievers as necessary to prevent infection and ease your discomfort in the days following your extraction. If you experience prolonged pain, bleeding or swelling following your procedure, be sure to call our office right away.
